Scary Stories from Afghanistan

The user "Necromode" shared the below story on Reddit.

I was deployed to Afghanistan twice, and my most memorable moments were gunfire, boredom, various combat operations, and shitty food.

It was the same time when I experienced the creepiest, most unexplainable, and strangest moments of my life.

First of all, I will explain to you what this country is like and the region where I was in.

I was in the Helmand Province, a part of Afghanistan. This area is a widely vast, dry, and mountainous desert. Temperature can reach 140 degrees Fahrenheit in the summertime.

Honestly, it looks like we're back in 2000 years. People there live in buildings made of mud. The only modern facilities they had were a few crappy cars and very limited electricity.

These people are a very weathered and haggard-looking race that looks almost as ancient as the treacherous landscape.

But this place gets totally different at night, as if the environment has changed its mood.

My platoon consists of me and 30 other marines who were at a small patrol base. Our platoon was broken into 3 squads.

This night, it was first squad's turn to go on a night patrol, and everything went well without any incident until the end of their patrol when they got back inside the wire.

I was on the post doing night watch, and there I noticed something strange.

A marine was patrolling down the empty road. He was all alone.

I was alarmed by this, and I immediately got the radio and asked if all the marines from the first squad were back inside the wire and accounted for.

The leader of the first squad confirmed that all marines are present here.

I looked back at this lone marine, but he was nowhere to be found, as if he had completely vanished into thin air.

I talk about this with others even after a long time, but this still creeps me out.

Maybe it was the ghost of any marine who died out there but is still wandering those empty roads on never-ending night patrols.

Whatever that was, it sticks to me as one of my creepiest experiences.

I have another story that didn't happen to me but to my friend from a different unit. I want to say that this friend of mine is trustworthy, and he has no reason to make up this story.

I can remember the fear and anxiety in his eyes as he was recalling this story to me for the first time.

He was on the night watch duty at around 2am. He was scanning the area periodically with his NVGs (night vision goggles).

Then, he noticed some kind of animal 100 yards away. He said it looks like a large dog with his ear pointed straight up just like the wolf.

He keeps watching this animal for a few more seconds until that thing stands up straight on its two legs.

This thing begins walking toward the local village. Its arms swing like humans when it walks.

I can say that my friend was not experiencing any hallucination that time because he was fully rested.
